About The NSFA

ABOUT US: The Newark Short Film Awards was founded by filmmaker Matt Williams to serve dual purposes. The first was to empower up and coming filmmakers, actors, and artists to display their work to a public audience and industry professionals. The second objective is to host a Day of Creativity by providing art, filmmaking and improvisation workshops, networking events, entertainment, and an overall support system for the community of actors, composer, directors, students, and industry professionals.

ABOUT THE EVENT The Newark Short Film Awards semi-annual event is presented in partnership with Express Newark and NYC Filmmakers in the historic and redeveloped Hahne & Co., building. Films may be submitted in the categories Comedy, Documentary, Narrative, Web Series. Trophies and prizes will be presented at the Awards Ceremony culminating the Newark Short Film Awards.

SUBMISSIONS: All submissions must be received by Friday, September 20, 2019.  Information regarding Early Bird Submissions, Rules and Terms can be found HERE.

DETAILS: The Newark Short Film Awards is designed for those interested and/or working in the filmmaking industry. For Movie Lovers, this is an opportunity to view outstanding shorts films and get rare behind the scenes introductions to the filmmaking process. The day is filled with an informative, lively and entertaining schedule of activities.

Mission: To support the art of short filmmaking, by creating platforms of learning, and screening of short films created by the filmmakers.

Ryan Talmadge – Volunteer Coordinator

Ryan Talmadge – Volunteer Coordinator

Ryan is the Vice President of the Civic Association, “Empowering Newark’s Future.” He was previously a candidate in the 2017 School Board election for the City of Newark as a member of the Community Team, running as an advocate for students with special needs.  Ryan works as a Security Supervisor for Rutgers University-Newark Department of Public Safety and collaborates with the Rutgers Honors Learning Living Center (HLLC) as an Admissions Evaluator and guest lecturer.  A soon to be alumni of Leadership Newark, he is the Class Captain of the 2019 LN cohort.  Ryan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Rutgers University.

Matt Williams, a Newark native, focuses on promoting the many positive initiatives happening within the urban community. In addition to sharing information, Williams' uses his various visual media skills to share his profound love for his city. He blogs on impactful topics and events centered around art, culture, entrepreneurship, and resident accomplishments. He specializes in the production of photography, videos documentaries, and narratives. Mr. Williams is also known for creating and hosting short film contests and festivals in and around the City of Newark.

As the founder of the Newark Short Film Awards, he brings his vision to life by creating a platform where up and coming filmmakers can demonstrate their short works of art, collaborate, expression, and be rewarded for their talents and gifts.

Always remembering the community, Mr. Williams is dedicated to training the unemployed and those re-entering society from the penal system in the art of digital media.

Amanda Holmes – Planning and Promotions Coordinator

In 2007, Amanda Holmes founded Virtually Assured Administrative Services (VAAS). VAAS provides an array of virtual services including event planning, fundraising concepts, human resources, marketing, media and public relations, community relations, written proposals, organizational and executive services. Holmes has intentionally made career choices that have aligned with her personal commitment to serve as a positive change agent in the community.

Past positions include Development Specialist of Hubbard House, (Domestic Violence Shelter); Director of Development for The Princeton Review; Executive Director of the CHILD Cancer Fund; Associate Director of Advancement for the Second Harvest Food Bank and the Director of Community Relations for Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, Inc. She is currently employed by Rutgers University – Newark in the Office of Communications.

But today and for the remainder of my existence, to Keep the Doors Open applies to anyone that I can help or assist in walking through their own doors making their vision into a reality.”

Rodney Reyes – Submissions and Screenings Coordinator

After receiving a BA in Theatre Arts from Rutgers University, Rodney co-founded a theatre company in NYC where he produced, directed and wrote original plays for the stage for several years throughout New York City.  In 2013 he founded a production company with self-minded talented individuals from previous projects called Fictional Films. Most recently his short film “Not Fade Away” won Best Short Film honors from the International Film Festival Manhattan NYC 2013. He recently received his MFA in Film from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
